Fourth Grade News

Wow! It's hard to believe it is already November!

The fourth grade students are working really hard and learning lots of new things so far this year.  We are already in Unit 3 in Reading.  We have worked on Predicting, Summarizing, Cause and Effect, Sequencing, Authors Purpose, and Main Idea and Details up to this point.  Our Reading series is designed to spiral throughout the year, so the students will get lots of practice with these skills and strategies.  We are also using Reciprocal Teaching in the classroom this year.  Reciprocal Teaching is designed to imporve comprehesion by using four strategies.  These strategies include predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing.  The students are working on mastering each of these strategies to become better at comprehension.

In Math, we have moved on to division and we are learning how to divide by one-digit numbers.  Some of the strategies we are learning are to divide using partial products, repeated subtraction, compatible numbers, regrouping, and placing the first digit. We continue to do daily review each day, reviewing previously taught skills and strategies, with our quiz every other Friday..  We continue to do problem solving every other Friday.  The students work on multi-step problems and use their problems solving skills to solve these problems.  The students are then required to write five paragraphs about what they and their partners did to solve the problem. The problem solving process also gives them time to work with partners and give and get feedback from other classmates.
