First Grade Happenings

First Grade Happenings

Time is moving quickly.  Students in first grade have a lot of things to master before the year is done so we are taking advantage of the guided reading program.  A first grade student is expected to rise from a level B to a level J reader.  Keep reading with them every day.  Statistics show reading for 20 minutes is necessary for reading achievement.  I am happy to say, we have many students rising in their levels. Ask your child what level they are on.

Our music time was moved to Tuesdays - leaving us with extra time on Thursdays. We made Thursdays our science investigation day. Last week, we made x-ray hands.  The students followed a 15 step process and was able to discuss bones, joints, and knuckles.

I have another investigation planned for this week.

With the change in the music program, Fran Kincanon who taught music on Tuesday and Thursdays; has joined our classroom in the afternoons.  Fran has a reading recovery background.  Her input, interaction with the students, and knowledge of the reading process is a valuable asset to our classroom.  We welcome her with open arms.

I have the open door policy for any questions or concerns a parent may have.  Feel free to come see me or e-mail me on btomlin@greencity.k12.mo.us
