Fighting COVID-19

Our school, our state, our country, our world – we are ALL fighting the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that has spread around the globe. We are not coming in to school and some of us are not able to go in to work. We are not even able to go visit our friends or go to church. We stay home, practicing “social distancing” to help protect us from getting sick from COVID-19. Many businesses are closed. We see people wearing masks and gloves if they do go out shopping for necessities.

This can be a scary time, and fear of the unknown is a REAL thing - but - knowledge is POWER! By knowing the facts about a scary situation, your fear is replaced with STRENGTH. I would like to provide you with some information and some websites where you can learn about COVID-19, including working plans to protect us from it. We will not be coming back into the school building for classes until this fall.

Germs and viruses are what make us sick and cause diseases. Some spread by touching them, then touching your face. Other germs and viruses spread just by being breathed in. There are some vaccinations and medications that help protect our bodies from some germs and viruses, but we do not have vaccines or medications to fight all of them. We get the immunizations, are taught to cover our coughs, to wash our hands often, social distancing, and to keep our bodies healthy and well rested so we can fight off many of the germs and viruses that make us sick. And, of course, to stay home if you are feeling sick!

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is the name of the new virus that is spreading all over the world right now, making many people sick. The Mo. Department of Health & Senior Services (MoDHSS) posted information online about COVID-19. To learn more about COVID-19, go HERE or copy & paste: https://health.mo.gov/living/healthcondiseases/communicable/novel-coronavirus/pdf/novel-coronavirus-factsheet.pdf .

President Trump, Vice-President Pence, and the White House Coronavirus Task Force (WHCTF) are working hard every day to coordinate and oversee the efforts to fight COVID-19 and keep our country safe. You can go online to Wikipedia to learn more about this task force HERE or copy & paste:
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Coronavirus_Task_Force .

The governors in every state in the United States are working with the WHCTF on plans for fighting COVID-19. Missouri’s Governor is Michael L. Parson, and current details are posted on his website HERE or copy & paste:  https://governor.mo.gov/ . The President and our Governor have live televised updates often. News companies (television, newspapers, etc.) do not all report the news in the same manner, making the information confusing at times. I recommend referring to these websites to stay the most updated. While global efforts are being made to test, treat, slow the spread, and create a vaccine to fight COVID-19, we can all do our part by “Doing the Five” at the top of this page, to stay safe and well, and keep those we care about safe too!

We work hard! We play hard! We are GC!             Beth Beyer, RN
