News From The Library

The year is flying by and I feel like I haven't had any time with the kiddos!  Virtual Learning and snow days really cut down on time to get those lessons in.

In Library, we have been learning about the Dewey Decimal System.  My goal is for the students in the upper elementary to be able to use the system to find their own books and know where they are located in the library.  The Dewey Decimal System is a way to put books in order by subject. It places the books on the shelf by subject using numbers from 000 to 999.  It is called "decimal" because it uses numbers to the right of the decimal point for more detail.  Knowing the system will help the students find books much faster on their own and not have to wait on me to look the books up for them.  The students are working each week with workstations pertaining to the system, in addition to lessons I will teach and will start using the system on their own soon.  They will be able to use a computer located inside the library doors to search for books by title, author, subject, or keywords.

In Computers, the students are practicing using their own usernames and passwords to log in, instead of a generic one for all students.  Each student has their own assigned username and password.   We are also using Google Suite to create documents, sheets, and slides and using Google Classroom.  During virtual learning, teachers utilize Google Classroom and Google Meet for assignments and communicating with students. Google allows the students to work in real time and enables multiple students to collaborate on the same document at the same time.  It also auto saves, so the students need not worry about losing their work.  Students are practicing logging in to their email accounts (which is how they get to Google Suite).  We will be working on how to compose a new email, choosing who to send it to, using the subject line, creating the message, and sending the email.  Students in the upper elementary are already familiar with this, so they will be practicing sending emails.
